A Community Parody

Saving the Greenway… from happy dogs?

A few residents don't want a dog park. Their reasoning? Migratory birds. Our reasoning? Let's talk about what's really going on.

Mueller: a community built for people and dogs

These photos were taken steps from the proposed Garcia Park dog park location. This is a vibrant, walkable neighborhood, and hundreds of residents exercise their dogs here every single day.

Mueller Community Association leash-required sign on Tom Miller Street at dusk

This leash-required sign went up on Tom Miller St. after the dog park was blocked. Dogs must be leashed even in open common fields, because there's no sanctioned off-leash space nearby.

Claim vs. Reality

The Southeast Greenway Alliance has made some creative arguments against a dog park in Mueller. Let's go through them.

Myth Busted
"A dog park will destroy native bird habitat in the Southeast Greenway."
The proposed Garcia Park site is a maintained grass field, not a habitat remnant. Austin Parks & Recreation, which manages actual habitat, approved funding for the pilot. If PARD thought it endangered wildlife, they wouldn't have offered the money.
Myth Busted
"There's overwhelming community opposition to a dog park in southeast Mueller."
Three independent surveys show the majority of Mueller POA members want off-leash space in southeast Mueller. Opposition comes from a small, vocal minority of homeowners closest to the proposed site.
Myth Busted
"Dogs and wildlife cannot coexist."
Fenced dog parks contain dogs by design. Dogs inside a fence cannot disturb birds outside the fence. Dog parks exist adjacent to wetlands, greenways, and nature preserves across the country without incident.
Speculation
"This is about protecting nature."
No formal environmental study was cited. The opposition came immediately after the dog park was proposed for a specific location near existing homes, not from a pre-existing conservation effort. Make of that what you will.

Why dog parks are good for communities

Research consistently shows dog parks improve safety, social cohesion, and neighborhood health. This isn't guesswork; it's data.

+40%
Growth in US dog parks since 2009 as communities find they reduce uncontrolled-dog incidents in shared spaces
Stronger
Sense of neighborhood social cohesion among dog park users; bonding and bridging social ties both improve significantly
15,000+
Residents now call Mueller home, and hundreds walk dogs in the SE area daily

What the surveys actually show

Three independent community surveys were conducted on off-leash space in Mueller. The results were consistent:

  • A strong majority of surveyed Mueller POA residents want an off-leash space in the southeast part of the neighborhood.
  • Support for Garcia Park specifically was highest among residents who live closest to the proposed site.
  • Austin PARD offered funding for a six-month pilot, meaning the city bears the risk and cost of finding out if it works.
  • The pilot was blocked when the Mueller POA couldn't reach agreement, despite PARD's offer. A consolation pilot was started in the far northwest corner, far from where most dog owners live.

How we got here

2024, Early
Austin Parks & Recreation Department (PARD) offers to fund a six-month off-leash pilot in Mueller. Community excitement grows among the neighborhood's hundreds of daily dog walkers.
2024, Mid
A small group of SE Mueller homeowners organize opposition, citing concerns about native bird habitat. The Southeast Greenway Alliance is formed. Yard signs appear. The pilot requires POA approval.
2024, Late
Community surveys show majority support for off-leash space in SE Mueller. Residents call for pilot parks in both Garcia Park (SE) and the Northwest Greenway.
2025
The Mueller Community Association starts a pilot dog park in the northwest corner of the neighborhood, far from most SE residents, and posts new leash-required signs at the fields near the SE area.
Now
Residents continue to push for a fair pilot at Garcia Park. The Mueller Property Owners Association still needs to hear from you.

The actual neighbors who need your help

The SE Greenway Alliance introduced you to their birds. We'd like to introduce you to some fellow Mueller residents who just want a place to run.

It's time for the Mueller POA to hear from you

The Mueller Property Owners Association has the authority to approve off-leash space in Garcia Park. A six-month pilot costs them nothing; PARD is offering to fund it. They just need the political will.
